About Essen

With a population of approximately 580,000 people, Essen made it into the top ten of Germany’s largest cities. In 2001 the formerly world’s largest colliery “Zeche Zollverein” had been declared World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Located on the River Ruhr and placed in the middle of the Ruhrgebiet (Ruhr Area), Essen and the Ruhr metropolitan area were chosen to become the European Capital of Culture 2010.

Artistic and cultural events

A huge range of different artistic and cultural events throughout the whole year help driving the Ruhrgebiet (Ruhr Area) into a poly-centric and dynamic metropolis. Over the past years Essen has turned into a great tourist region and offers its visitors a lot of attractions in all areas of life, such as: museums, opera houses, art exhibitions, parks and malls, recreational areas and industrial heritage.
